Program History

Tech Tutors is a free, virtual K-12 tutoring service provided by Michigan Tech student volunteers and was established to help meet the evolving needs of kids and families associated with online learning during the COVID crisis and beyond. This program is the result of a collaboration among the Michigan Tech Center for Educational Outreach, Michigan Tech’s Pavlis Honors College, and school districts across Michigan. Since our inception in the spring of 2020, we have provided free individual and group tutoring sessions over 100 students of all K-12 grade levels who are struggling with the challenges of online learning and contributed more than 1000 volunteer hours in over 20 different subjects.

This student-led program has grown from a small volunteer organization with 10 original tutors helping local communities around the Michigan Tech campus and evolved into something much larger by serving over 30 K-12 school districts across Michigan by the end of 2020. Since our services are provided free of cost and run solely by student volunteers, we rely on external funding, donations, and grants to cover operation costs and supply K-12 students in need with online learning tools such as internet and device resources.
